receive this piece by Alberto Montanari, who will attend the event Saturday afternoon Barbier. It contains interesting reflections on the figure of the great mountain climber, a pioneer of free climbing. When I was asked to write my thoughts on Claudio Barbier I asked "why?". Why should my thoughts be of interest? I am just an avid mountain, not too bold. Climb the fourth grade with a little 'of the fifth, the streets of Armando Aste for me are just dreams, and these will remain. Of course, my passion leads me to read many books on mountain climbing many guides, but from here to form an informed opinion goes there. Do you think that you think back, I concluded that I am just like many a climber and that perhaps, just that I can write the impressions Claudio Barbier raised in a one as many.
Yet I must say that for me Claudio Barbier inspiration was very important. It will be because to me every so often like to go alone, but this great lonely fascinated me immediately. When I read that masterpiece which I think is "The Way of the Dragon" I opened up a world that person so much that now seems almost to have known him personally (when in fact I started climbing 10 years after his death). I think Claudio Barbier has left an important mark from the technical point of view. His look of distinction were the big solo on big walls. The linkage of the five solo Lavaredo North in 1961 was an enterprise of very thick, what is more ahead of its time.
Beyond, however, the technical aspect, I believe that the greatness of Barbier is mainly due to his "I", which we now know thanks to The Way Dragon ". I believe that a common feature the climbers of the late sixties and seventies is their "transparency", that their frequent willingness to express their motivations, their own thoughts and doubts. This did not happen as often before. Mountaineers' previous know every detail of their businesses, we know the technical aspects, but do not know well their thoughts, their fears, their questions. Since the late sixties, however, the climbers lose their fear of revealing the self. And we, especially the common people like me, we see them closer, more like us.
Behold, I have tried this reading "The Way of the Dragon": I heard Barbier near me, I could compare her fears and anxieties with mine. Barbier I think it was a normal person who lived mountaineering placing the important questions that even the amateur mountaineer arises, sometimes experiencing great internal contradictions. However, thanks to his efforts, with a good dose of determination, and also because of its condition is wealthy and could leave an indelible mark on the mountains and especially on the climbers. I believe this is essential to understand the character Claudio Barbier : focus on its human message, rather than sul segno lasciato sulle montagne.
My companion shouted very loud, even though there was not need because the mountains were deserted "Way of the Dragon!" . At that moment I felt very close to Claudio Barbier .
